Homemade Chocolate Sauce

Instructions:

  1. Combine the Water and Sugars: In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine the water, granulated sugar, and brown sugar. Stir until the sugars are completely dissolved. This should take about 2-3 minutes. Make sure the heat is not too high to avoid caramelizing the sugar.
  2. Add Cocoa and Salt: Sift the cocoa powder to remove any lumps and then add it to the saucepan along with the salt. Stir continuously until the mixture is smooth and the cocoa is fully incorporated. This step is crucial to avoid lumps in your chocolate sauce.
  3. Boil the Mixture: Increase the heat to medium-high and bring the mixture to a slight boil. Then, reduce the heat to maintain a gentle simmer. Allow the mixture to simmer for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. The sauce will begin to thicken slightly.
  4. Add Vanilla and Butter: After the sauce has simmered, remove the pan from the heat. Stir in the vanilla extract and butter until the butter is completely melted and the sauce is smooth. The vanilla adds flavor, while the butter gives the sauce a glossy finish and rich taste.
  5. Cool and Store: Allow the sauce to cool for a few minutes before using. If you notice any skin forming on the top, gently stir the sauce to reintegrate. For storage, transfer the cooled chocolate sauce to a glass jar or an airtight container. It can be refrigerated for up to 2 weeks. When you want to use it, gently reheat the sauce in the microwave or on the stove, adding a little water if it’s too thick.

Tips:

  • For a deeper chocolate flavor, you can add a tablespoon of espresso powder or instant coffee granules along with the cocoa powder.
  • If you prefer a sweeter sauce, you can adjust the amount of granulated sugar to taste. Conversely, for a darker sauce, increase the cocoa powder or reduce the sugar.
  • This chocolate sauce can also be used as a dip for fruit, a topping for pancakes or waffles, or mixed into milk for homemade chocolate milk.

Enjoy your homemade chocolate sauce with your favorite desserts or as a delightful addition to your breakfast pancakes or waffles!
