Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Mix the Solution
In a small mixing bowl, combine one part borax with three parts sugar. For example, if you’re using 1 tablespoon of borax, mix it with 3 tablespoons of sugar. Add enough water to create a syrup-like consistency and stir well until everything is dissolved.
2. Prepare the Cotton Balls
Soak the cotton balls or pads in the borax-sugar solution until they are fully saturated. Be sure to squeeze out any excess liquid so that the cotton balls are damp but not dripping.
3. Place the Cotton Balls
Strategically place the soaked cotton balls around your kitchen, focusing on areas where you’ve seen ants. Common spots include near windows, doors, and along the baseboards. You can also place them near any food sources or entry points you’ve identified.
4. Let It Work
Leave the cotton balls in place for at least 24 hours. The ants will be attracted to the sugar, consume the borax-laced solution, and carry it back to their colony. The borax will then work its magic, eradicating the entire ant population from the source.
5. Dispose of the Cotton Balls
After 24 hours, check the cotton balls. If they’re full of ants, it’s time to dispose of them. Simply toss them in the trash and replace them with fresh ones if needed. Continue this process until you no longer see any ants in your kitchen.
Additional Tips and Tricks
- Prevention Is Key: Once you’ve eliminated the ants, take steps to prevent them from returning. Keep your kitchen clean, store food in airtight containers, and seal any cracks or entry points.
- Use Caution with Borax: While borax is generally safe, it’s still a good idea to keep it out of reach of children and pets. If you prefer, you can use less borax or place the cotton balls in areas that are inaccessible to little ones.
- Alternative Solutions: If you’re out of borax, you can try using baking soda or diatomaceous earth as a substitute. Both are natural alternatives that are safe and effective.
