Ingredients
- 1 pound ground beef (80/20 for juicier burgers)
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 4 slices of your favorite bread (Texas toast, sourdough, or classic sandwich bread work well)
- 4 slices of cheddar cheese (or your preferred cheese)
- 4 tablespoons butter, softened
- 2 tablespoons mayonnaise (optional for extra crispiness)
- Toppings: lettuce, tomato, pickles, onions, ketchup, mustard, etc.
Directions
1. Form the Burger Patties
Divide the ground beef into 4 equal portions and shape them into patties slightly larger than your bread slices (they’ll shrink as they cook). Season both sides of the patties generously with salt and pepper.
2. Cook the Patties
Heat a large skillet or grill pan over medium-high heat. Add the patties to the hot pan and cook for 4–5 minutes on each side, or until they reach your desired level of doneness. For medium, the internal temperature should be around 160°F (71°C). Once the patties are done, set them aside to rest.
3. Prepare the Bread and Cheese
While the patties rest, butter one side of each bread slice. On the unbuttered side, spread a thin layer of mayonnaise (optional for extra crispiness). Place a slice of cheese on two of the bread slices.
4. Assemble and Grill
In the same skillet, place two buttered bread slices (butter side down) and top each with a cooked burger patty. Add another slice of cheese on top of the patties and cover with the remaining bread (butter side up), creating a sandwich.
5. Cook the Bread Cheese Burgers
Grill the sandwiches over medium heat, pressing them gently with a spatula. Cook for about 3–4 minutes on each side, until the bread is golden brown and crispy, and the cheese is melted. Be careful not to burn the bread.
6. Serve
Remove the burgers from the skillet and cut them in half for easy serving. Add your favorite toppings like lettuce, tomato, pickles, and condiments, or enjoy them as they are for a simple, cheesy delight.
