Step-by-Step Directions

Step 1: Prepare the Nut Mixture

In a large mixing bowl, combine the finely chopped walnuts, pistachios, almonds, granulated sugar, ground cinnamon, ground cloves, ground nutmeg, and ground cardamom. Mix well to ensure the spices are evenly distributed.

Step 2: Preheat and Prepare

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease the baking dish with some of the melted butter.

Step 3: Assemble the Baklava

Unroll the phyllo dough and cut it to fit your baking dish if necessary. Cover the dough with a damp cloth to prevent it from drying out.

Place one sheet of phyllo dough in the bottom of the prepared baking dish and brush it with melted butter. Repeat this process with 7 more sheets of phyllo, buttering each layer.

Sprinkle a thin layer of the nut mixture over the buttered phyllo. Add another layer of 8 sheets of phyllo, buttering each sheet. Continue layering the nut mixture and phyllo sheets, finishing with a final layer of 8 buttered phyllo sheets.

Step 4: Cut and Bake

Using a sharp knife, cut the assembled baklava into diamond or square shapes. Make sure to cut all the way through to the bottom layer.

Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes, or until the baklava is golden brown and crisp.

Step 5: Prepare the Syrup

While the baklava is baking, prepare the syrup. In a saucepan, combine the water, granulated sugar, honey, vanilla extract, cinnamon stick, whole cloves, and orange zest. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 10 minutes. Remove from heat and let the syrup cool slightly.

Step 6: Add the Syrup

Remove the baked baklava from the oven and immediately pour the prepared syrup evenly over the hot baklava. Let it sit and absorb the syrup for at least 4 hours, or overnight for best results.

Tips and Variations

  • Nut Variations: Feel free to use your favorite nuts or whatever you have on hand, such as pecans or hazelnuts.
  • Flavor Twist: Add a splash of rosewater or orange blossom water to the syrup for an aromatic twist.
  • Texture Tip: For extra crispiness, make sure each layer of phyllo is well-buttered and bake until golden brown.

How to Store Leftovers

Store any leftover baklava in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days. For longer storage, you can refrigerate it for up to 2 weeks. Allow the baklava to come to room temperature before serving for the best texture and flavor.
